'When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.' Dit is het begin van de Amerikaanse Onafhankelijkheidsverklaring die officieel wordt aangenomen op 4 juli 1776. Met dit document verklaren twaalf van de dertien Amerikaanse koloniën zich onafhankelijk van de jarenlange Britse overheersing. De verklaring is opgebouwd uit een aantal 'vanzelfsprekende waarheden', zoals het recht op gelijkheid, vrijheid en geluk. Tegenwoordig staat 4 juli in Amerika bekend als Independence Day, een belangrijke feestdag waarop de onafhankelijkheid wordt gevierd.
